North Shore Story: Reputation Management in Minnesota

While vacationing with our family on Minnesota's beautiful North Shore of Lake Superior, our car suffered a mishap in a construction zone. A large rock tumbled out of the dump truck in front of us and before we could react or stop, we had driven over it, leaving a 5 inch hole in the oil pan. We immediately pulled over to Split Rock State Park, where I began searching for a tow service. Luckily, I had seen a tow truck assisting someone else at another Minnesota State park two days earlier, and I remembered the name: Blazers Auto Service. Using my smartphone, I ran a search on Google and discovered that:

    • a Blazers does not have a web site.
    • b. There are plenty of online reviews - SOME QUITE NEGATIVE - in various directories (Yahoo Local, Yelp, etc.) with the phone number.

Joomla Web Design

A Content Management System (CMS) is a method of web design that allows non-specialists to create, edit, manage, and publish all kinds of content and digital images or media. A CMS website will always have two 'views' or ways of accessing the site: a 'front-end view', which is how the website design appears to the public, and a 'back-end' or 'admin view', which is where the site administrators can log in to access a control panel.

A well-built Joomla CMS (Content Management System) web design not only gives you access to and complete control over your site's content and images, it also is a powerful tool for reaching out to current and potential audiences for your company or organization. Here are seven ways that illustrate how this happens - and there might even be more than 7:

  1. Better page ranking through fresher content.
  2. Better page ranking through structural SEO.
  3. Internal linking and stronger navigation.
  4. Tags, tagging and tag clouds.
  5. Blogging.
  6. Social Media.
  7. Site Maps.

Let's explore these advantages in greater detail.

One challenge in choosing a CMS platfrom is the abundance of information and partisan claims about the relative merits of each platform, as well as the defects of competing platforms. Ask 10 developers about their preferred CMS, and you are apt to get a wide range of answers. I have built, developed and tested sites in all of the major platforms, including the three most popular: Wordpress, Drupal, and Joomla. Each platform has some advantages and disadvantages, esepcially when it comes to optimzing your web site (SEO) or crafting more sophisticated navigation systems.

When individuals, businesses, and organizations turn to Google, Yahoo or Bing to look for help for their websites, they rarely use terms like "website development" or "website programming" or even "website design & development." Instead, the most commonly used search phrase by far is "web design" in combination with other terms that narrow the field by organization type and/or geography, e.g. "web design wiccans delaware".

The primacy of "design" as a keyword extends beyond search engine queries into a broader bias about the way websites and digital marketing are supposed to work. Many of my clients in Minneapolis, South Carolina and elsewhere have reacted to the first round of designs for their new Joomla website by saying (in so many words): "It looks great, but do we need all that verbiage on the home page?" My short answer is always the same: yes. My long answer is that Joomla offer many brilliant tools and web design capabilities for artfully presenting lots of content. These tools help create a Joomla web design that emphasizes design elements and whitespace while providing an interactive space for content.
